Chappelle's
Show has been a smash success on Comedy Central ever since the very first
episode aired in 2003. It's a wildly successful sketch comedy show,
and every single sketch features Dave Chappelle. (Actually, in some
cases, he plays more than one character in a single scene.) He's a
great comedian, and this translates well to television.
As for the actual DVD set, I'm still a little
undecided as to how to grade it. The set features the first 12
episodes of the series, completely uncensored. This was the first
thing that actually bothered me. Sure, I love hearing the F-word as
much as the next guy, but it also sounds funny to hear the bleep on TV.
I was torn between which I liked better. Perhaps they could offer an
additional audio track with the bleeps for the next season ...
The commentary on the DVD set is only on a few of
the episodes, and it's nothing worth listening to. It rarely adds
anything interesting to the show.
There are a few extras like a long blooper/deleted
scene reel which contains a half hour of extra stuff. It's definitely
worth watching. There's some funny stuff there. One thing I did
notice by watching the DVD set is that there is a LOT of commercial time on
this show. While most shows are 20-22 minutes without commercials,
Chappelle's Show borders on 17 minutes with the ads cut. It's nice to
see them uninterrupted.
Overall, the show itself is a 10. The only
reason I've lowered the score for the DVD set is because it wasn't really
much more than you get from the TV show. (Don't get confused though.
I still like owning the set.) It's a wildly entertaining show, and
something that everyone into comedy should get.
