Barbershop
was a breakout hit in 2002, when it captured the hearts of mainstream
audiences. This was a great success for Ice Cube, and a sequel was
sure to follow. In the sequel, the Barbershop is still running, but
there's trouble ahead. Urban redevelopment has convinced (or forced) a
lot of the family owned businesses to leave the neighborhood, making way for
a few "chain" type places to appear. What's first on the list? A
new hair cutting place called "Nappy Cuts" will be opening right across the
street from Calvin's (Ice Cube) Barbershop.
While this seems like an interesting plot, it's
really not. The movie kind of drags it's feet on what little plot
there is, and nothing major really happens. That doesn't necessarily
mean that it's a bad movie, rather it just doesn't have the great story like
the first one. Most of the original characters are back, and
they're playing their parts just as good as they did the first time around.
That was a good thing.
Overall, there were a few funny spots in the
movie, but you never really cared about the story. There were no plot
twists, and the story kind of fizzled out at the end. It was just a
bunch of goofy stuff happening over a few weeks time. Barbershop 2 was
still fun though. It was entertaining to watch, and I'd definitely see
it again if I needed an Ice Cube fix.
