Barbershop was a
breakout hit when it made it’s debut in theaters, and rightfully so. Ice Cube
plays the Calvin, the owner of a local barbershop given to him by his father.
The shop isn’t doing so well, so Calvin decides to take on a business partner
to help cover expenses. The man he does business with (Keith David) isn’t
exactly ethical, however. He decides to turn he place into a gentleman’s
club, and this doesn’t sit well with Calvin. When he sees the employees and
customers that will be hurt by the loss of the local barbershop, he decides to
try to back out of the deal. Of course, any movie bad guy wants double the
money that was given to him originally. Also, like any movie, Calvin only has
a limited amount of time to acquire it.
The
movie focuses on Calvin’s realization about just how important the barbershop
is to the community. Unfortunately, he realizes this after he’s sold the
place and it’s too late to turn back. He struggles to try to make things
right again, and you really get into the movie with ease.
There
are several little side stories, including two guys who stole an ATM from the
store across the street. They constantly are trying to find a place to hide
the thing, and have to keep transporting it back and forth through town. It’s
very funny to see two knuckleheads try to conceal a giant ATM from everyone in
town.
Overall, it’s a movie about a simple day in the barbershop, and the importance
of friends and family. It’s not only a moving story, the movie is quite funny
in many places. It’s a great movie, and I would definitely recommend watching
it.
